The University Visit Program is designed to support prospective historically underrepresented graduate students’ travel to the University of Utah. The UVP provides an opportunity for prospective graduate students to meet with department advisors, professors, current students, and the Assistant Dean for Diversity. The meetings, interviews, and/or events will provide you with a forum to ask questions about the program coursework, research opportunities, assistantships, mentoring, etc., which will help you determine if our graduate program will be a good fit intellectually, culturally, and professionally. The UVP is an opportunity for a two-way interview. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of making an informed decision in choosing a graduate and/or professional program.
We anticipate that your University Visit Program will include personal attention in the following ways:
- Interview with faculty in your graduate program of interest with the goal of identifying an appropriate mentor and/or advisor,
- Network with current graduate students in your program of interest to gain an insider’s perspective,
- Meet with the Assistant Dean for Diversity who can share information about recruitment and retention initiatives, and
- Learn how you can contribute to the increasingly diverse campus community, specifically with underrepresented graduate students.
There are a limited number of UVP awards. Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, the promise of academic success, financial need, and a sustained personal commitment to historically underrepresented communities in the U.S. and in the academy.
Level of Support:
The Graduate School Diversity Office is dedicated to collaborating with university departments to administer the University Visit Program. The Diversity Office and the academic program will co-sponsor all or part of the prospective student’s travel-related expenses. Please note, that the Graduate School Diversity Office can cost match airfare and lodging expenses only.
- Self-identifies as a member of a historically underrepresented population,
- Have applied and been accepted into a graduate program,
- Earned a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher.
- Student Application,
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV),
- An essay that describes how the applicant self-identifies as a member of a historically underrepresented population, their sustained personal commitment to historically underrepresented communities in the U.S., and why an in-person visit will be beneficial to the applicant (maximum of 500 words double-spaced), and
- Department nomination and commitment form.
